How to stop a blocked nose?

Knowing the causes of a stuffy nose can help you choose the best solution to clear blockage and breathe freely again

A familiar feeling which gets right up your nose: nose congestion is irritating for anyone.

How to stop a blocked nose?

Symptoms are usually excess mucus or runny nose, normally the result of a cold or flu or an allergic reaction; nasal tissues become inflamed and our nasal passages become narrower or the production of mucus increases to clear our nose from unwanted allergens or bacteria, both of which obstruct the air flow and so breathing through the nose becomes difficult and at times impossible.

Congestion can be particularly annoying at night because when we are not in an upright position, we can no longer rely on the downward pull of gravity which helps move mucus out of our nose, which makes for a difficult night….and a very miserable day after.

Severe nose congestion can cause pressure on the face, eyes and head which is quite uncomfortable.

What to do?

Always keep hydrated and beware of air conditioning, dryness can cause a stuffy nose, so a hot shower or a humidifier can offer relief, as well as breathing in the steam of hot water and essential oils.

A nose flush pot called neti pot is a very good way to keep your nasal passage clean and moist; a saline nose wash works well too.

When nose congestion causes pressure around the head, try a warm compress by soaking a towel in hot water and placing it over your eyes and nose.

Your doctor or pharmacist can advise you on the best anti allergy tablets or on a decongestant spray, though beware of contraindications and long term use side effects. Medical solutions are fast and effective though not always great for our health.

To prevent unwanted substances from being inhaled through the nose, nasal filters are a great solution: SinuSet filter uses a patented filtering membrane covering a plastic arch which shields the nose from allergens and pollutants. See the full product spec for more information.
